Press braking, or brake forming, is a metal metalworking process of fashioning metal parts and objects through mechanical deformation. This is achieved by using a machine press brake to grip the metal piece between a punch and a die set for planned bending.
Press braking provides a highly accurate metal bend for several types of parts. The press braking process makes a array of shapes, some of the most common shapes being a 90° rib form, V bottom, channel, closing, double form, hat channel, offset, open hat channel, and others. The workpiece is reshaped without adding or removing material, and its mass remains true. Forming operates on the materials science principle of plastic deformation, where the physical shape of a material is permanently contorted.
